Connective Tissue Release
The Connective Tissue Release Method™ (CTR) is a powerful hands-on therapy, that follows Kinetic Chain Release, it is designed to free restrictions in the connective tissue and restore natural movement, balance, and wellbeing.
KCR is always our first step in aiming for alignment because it is highly effective however, sometimes we need to go a little deeper and focus on certain areas of the body to provide more support on the body’s journey to alignment. Typically, we would complete 3 KCR sessions before introducing Connective Tissue Release, should a more in-depth treatment be required.
What is Connective Tissue Release?
Connective Tissue Release, often called Myofascial Release, is a gentle yet transformative approach that works intuitively with the body’s natural intelligence. Enabling the body to unwind deeply held tension. Supporting both emotional and physical release within the body and restoring natural movement.
CTR works on the body’s fascia; the connective tissue network that wraps around and supports every muscle, bone, organ, and nerve. Fascia is the body’s inner web; it links everything together.
Fascia is the “Full-Body Connector”, it links all your muscles, joints, and bones together. It is thin, stretchy, connective tissue that wraps around your muscles, bones, and organs. Like a flexible full-body suit, keeping everything in place, helping you move, and supporting your posture.
When the fascia becomes tight, dehydrated, or restricted because of injury, posture, trauma, or stress. It can cause pain, stiffness, and a sense of “stuck-ness” both physically and emotionally.

Unhealthy fascia can cause chronic discomfort. Long hours at a desk, driving, or even habitual standing postures can make fascia shorter and less elastic. Falls and accidents can cause injuries that make fascia tight, this restricted fascia reduces mobility and can subtly pull the body out of alignment.
Knowledge of fascia and how it works will help you gain clarity on how your body works and why localised pain can have a whole-body origin.
Connective Tissue Release helps restore natural movement patterns and freeing fascia is key to that process. CTR involves applying gentle, sustained pressure to restrictions within the fascia. We apply patient and precise contact and we wait, for the tissue to respond.
As the body begins to release what it is ready to let go of, the tissue will soften, unwind and lengthen at it's own pace.
The result?
Improved mobility, reduced pain, better posture, and an overall feeling of lightness and freedom. As though your body is finally moving, the way it is meant to.
The Origins of Connective Tissue Release
Connective Tissue Release Method ™ was developed by Hugh Gilbert, a Scottish physiotherapist, creator of Kinetic Chain Release and founder of the KCR Academy.
CTR is based loosely on the pioneering work of John F. Barnes, Hugh trained with John and then evolved his own distinctive method of Myofascial (Connective Tissue) Release. He combined the foundational ideas of fascial release with his own therapeutic intuition, sequencing, and understanding of how structure and emotion intertwine. The result was the Connective Tissue Release Method ™, a refined, patient and highly effective approach that honours both science and the subtle art of bodywork.
Connective Tissue Release
can help with:
Muscular tension and back or neck pain
Postural imbalances and restricted movement
Headaches, TMJ, and joint discomfort
Injury recovery and scar tissue restriction
Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and tension-related pain
Emotional release and nervous system balance
Our fascial network doesn’t just hold us together physically, it is also linked in with our emotional and nervous systems. Stress, trauma, or unprocessed emotion can become embodied, creating areas of tightness and protective holding.
Connective Tissue Release works on multiple levels; physical, emotional, and energetic. It helps the body return to a state of ease and harmony in it's own time. Because fascia weaves through every part of the body, the effects of releasing it can ripple out in surprising and transformative ways.
By gently freeing restrictions in the connective tissue, the body can move more naturally, circulation improves, and pressure on nerves and joints eases. The result is a noticeable reduction in pain and a sense of lightness where heaviness once lived.
